hours North of Auckland.
We have glorious white sand beaches, lush temperate native
forests, museums, antique stores, art galleries, eateries, cafes,
olive farm and
vineyard visits, great B&Bs and youth hostels.
Our community offer a range of activities such as swimming, fishing,
boating cruises, bush walks, water skiing, archery, golf, tennis,
surfing, hiking, diving, horse riding, caving, kayaking, snorkelling,
exploring or just lazing in the sun. Its the perfect place for
a midwinter break.
According to Maori legend, the North Island of New Zealand
was an enormous fish, caught by the adventurer Maui. For this
reason, Northland sometimes goes by the nickname of "The
tail of the fish", Te Hiku o Te Ika. Some of the oldest traces
of Maori kainga (fishing villages), can be found here.
Waipu is a town in Bream Bay with a colourful history and a
Scottish heritage. Waipu was the centre of a significant Presbyterian
settlement led by Rev. Norman McLeod, a Presbyterian Minister
who led his people from the Highlands of Scotland to New Zealand
via St. Ann's, Nova Scotia and Australia. Five shiploads of settlers
arrived at Waipu in the 1850s. A highlight of the town's calendar
is the annual Highland Games held at New Year.
The townships of Mangawhai and Waipu are home to many talented
artists. You can view their works in the
galleries and craft shops,
and enjoy the local markets and fairs. Or just unwind in one of
the trendy cafes.
